Introduction

The NCAA compiled the following statistical information regarding student-athlete race and ethnicity in intercollegiate athletics at its member institutions. This information provides a general view of student-athlete race and ethnicity trends by gender and sport.

Suggestions for the reader

It is important to note that the statistics provided are derived from self-reported data supplied by member institutions. No specific checks were made to verify the information provided by the institutions. While this information provides our best estimate of recent general trends in student-athlete race and ethnicity, the data may not be absolutely precise.

Factors affecting the data

As with any data collection effort, there were minor errors and omissions in the data collection process. These errors necessitated the estimation of the frequencies of student-athletes within each race and ethnicity category based on the proportions of student-athletes within each race and ethnicity category in the observed data. This estimation was possible because of the high response rate and the low error rate. Therefore, the reported percentages and frequencies in the overall tables can be considered good estimations of the actual student-athlete race and ethnicity data.

Race and ethnicity category definitions

In an effort to increase the accuracy of the data and for ease of comparison, the seven race and ethnicity categories used in this report are the same categories that are defined by the federal government and used in the NCAA Graduation-Rates Reports. More specifically, there are six race and ethnicity categories (i.e., American Indian/Alaskan Native; Asian/Pacific Islander; Black, Non-Hispanic; Hispanic; Other; and White, Non-Hispanic) and one category for Nonresident Aliens (i.e., foreign student-athletes).

For the purposes of this report the following definitions were used for the race and ethnicity categories:

• American Indian or Alaskan Native - A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North America and who maintains cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition.

• Asian or Pacific Islander - A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or Pacific Islands. This includes people from China, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands, American Samoa, India, and Vietnam.

• Black, Non-Hispanic - A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa (except those of Hispanic origin).

• Hispanic - A person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.

• Nonresident Alien - A person who is not a citizen or national of the United States and who is in this country on a visa or temporary basis and does not have the right to remain  indefinitely.

• White, Non-Hispanic - A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, North Africa, or the Middle East (except those of Hispanic origin).

Note: Schools reporting “Other” can account for multiple meanings.  The other category includes those student-athletes that identify as multi-racial, those schools who do not require racial or ethnic identification, and/or allows for different interpretations of racial/ethnic categories.
