2.      INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

a.      NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee Position Proposal 2007-109.

The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee is opposed to Proposal 2007-109, which would permit TWO videographers and one photographer for the purposes of capturing video and still photographs of the member institution’s competition in an NCAA championship for the sole use of the institution.

An essential cornerstone of NCAA agreements with CBS and ESPN is the preservation of their rights to exclusively capture and produce video components of our championship competition – whether live, on tape, online or on home video. To the extent possible, the NCAA works hard to accommodate other video needs – including scouting (which is fully accommodated and always has been) and access to capture institutional video which has been accommodated to the extent possible with the team videographer legislation two years ago. All game footage in the case of basketball is available to the teams through video feeds and copies that are provided.

Additionally, there currently is limited space for existing photographers let alone additional institutional representatives indicated in this proposal. In the case of women’s basketball, for example, if this were to be permitted, ESPN would expect to have access to the locker room as well, without exception.

b.      NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee Position on Coaches’ Microphones.

The Division I Women’s Basketball Committee does not support the placement of microphones on a member of the coaching staff, in team huddles and/or bench areas for television, radio or motion-picture purposes.

The Division I Women’s Basketball Committee is concerned that microphones on coaches would inhibit coaches from communicating with their student-athletes and create recruiting advantages. Additionally, the committee does not believe this practice provides significant enhancement to the telecast.
