REPORT OF THE
NCAA MEN’S WATER POLO COMMITTEE
ACTION ITEMS.
1. Automatic
Qualification.
a. Recommendation. That the following three conferences be
recommended for automatic qualification for the 2008 championship: Collegiate Water Polo Association,
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and Western Water Polo Association.
b. Rationale. These three conferences meet the requirements to be eligible for automatic qualification.
c. Estimated Budget Impact. None.
d. Student-Athlete Impact. None.
2. Selection
Criteria.
a. Recommendation. That effective with the 2008-09 season, the committee begin using primary and secondary criteria.
b. Rationale. The committee noted that it would like to have more defined selection criteria. It also was noted that the committee would like to follow the format that has been laid out for the other Division I championships. The following would be the criteria:
Selection Criteria
The following criteria shall be employed by a governing sports committee in selecting participants for NCAA championships competition [Bylaw 31.3.3; Criteria for Selection of Participants]:
· Won-lost record;
· Strength of schedule; and
· Eligibility and availability of student-athletes for NCAA championships.
In addition to Bylaw 31.3.3, the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Committee has received approval from the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet to consider the following criteria in the selection of at-large teams for the men’s water polo championship (not necessarily in priority order):
Primary Criteria:
Head-to-Head Competition.
Results vs. Common Opponents.
Strength of Schedule (determined by looking at a team’s results against top teams in the sponsoring conferences).
Secondary Criteria:
Late Season Performance (last ten games, including conference tournaments).
Results against teams already selected.
c. Estimated Budget Impact. None.
d. Student-Athlete Impact. None.
3. Committee
Chair.
a. Recommendation. That Mike Sutton, director of physical education and athletics, at Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges, be appointed the chair of the men’s water polo committee.
b. Rationale. Mr. Sutton is currently serving as the interim chair of the committee. He has great history with the water polo community and will continue to be a great leader for the committee.
c. Estimated Budget Impact. None.
d. Student-Athlete Impact. None.
