ACTION
ITEMS.
1. Automatic
Qualification.
a. Recommendation. That the following conferences be approved for automatic qualification for the 2008 championship: Atlantic Coast Conference, America East Conference, Big East Conference, Big Ten Conference, Colonial Athletic Association. The play-in games will be the Northeast Conference at the Patriot League, the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference at the Ivy Group and the Mid-American Conference at the Atlantic 10 Conference.
b. Rationale. These recommendations are based on the final Rating Percentage Index (RPI) for 2007.
c. Estimated Budget Impact. None.
d. Student-Athlete Impact. None.
2. Selection
Criteria.
a. Recommendation. That the criteria for selecting teams to the field hockey championship be modified to eliminate the Performance Index (PI) and further define “late season performance” as “the last seven games of the season, including conference tournament games,” effective with the 2008 championship.
b. Rationale. The committee believes, through increased availability and recent enhancements to the field hockey Rating Percentage Index (RPI) reports, that the Performance Index (PI) is no longer a viable selection criterion and should be removed. At one time, the performance index provided information that was not available to the committee through the other selection criteria, but this is no longer the case. Furthermore, the adjustment to the late season performance criteria serves to "fine-tune" the secondary selection criteria that are currently in place. With these adjustments, the primary and secondary selection criteria would read as follows:
When selecting at-large teams, the Division I Field Hockey Committee will weigh the following primary and secondary factors (not necessarily in priority order):
Primary Criteria:
· Rating Percentage Index (RPI).
· Head-to-head competition.
· Results against common opponents.
Secondary Criterion:
· Late season performance in last seven games, including conference tournament play (strength and results).
c. Estimated Budget Impact. None.
d. Student-Athlete Impact. None.
3. Committee Chair.
a. Recommendation. That Nancy Lyons, Boston University, be appointed chair, effective September 1, 2008.
b. Rationale. Ms. Lyons has the support of the committee. The current committee chair, Erin McDermott, will rotate off of the committee, effective August 31, 2008.
c. Estimated Budget Impact. None.
d. Student-Athlete Impact. None.
